What are the best telephoto lenses for Canon digital SLR cameras?

Notes:

An EF-S designation means the lens is suitable for APS-C 1.6x-crop cameras. Lack of this designation means the lens can be used on full-frame cameras such as the 1Ds series and the Canon 5D.
USM means the lens incorporates a silent wave motor for auto-focusing.
An IS (Image Stabilization) lens has vibration reduction capability.
