Canon Powershot SD1000 / Digital IXUS 70 Samples

Filed under: Canon PowerShot SD1000 | Last updated: Thursday, August 9th, 2007

The 7.1 MP (Megapixel) Powershot SD1000 is an incredibly good-looking compact camera that was announced in February 2007, and the highlight feature of this model is that it's Canon's slimmest digital camera ever, at only 19.4 mm thick. Part of evaluating any camera is to understand the level of quality you can get with the images coming out of it, and I summarize here links to various photo samples from the SD1000 that are available online.

These are some of the most impressive set of official pictures I've seen coming from Canon digital cameras. My favorites are the portrait (marvelous detail in the hair and fabric, and very realistic texture in the skin) and last image, which is a landscape bathed in the light of the setting sun. Michael has posted one of the best sets of SD1000 test shots on the internet. These sample photos come right out of the camera without any postprocessing or editing, and you can view the full-sized version by clicking on the thumbnail, then All Sizes, and finally you click on Original. He has also gone the extra mile by putting the crucial bits of the EXIF data in the title of the image - just float your mouse cursor over the thumbnails and you'll be able to view ISO, speed, aperture, zoom and whether macro mode was used. The high ISO pictures from ISO400 onwards are quite usable, provided you don't print them large. You can also read his short review of the SD1000 which is quite positive.

Even though this SD1000 ISO1600 image has been resized, it gives a pretty good idea of the quality you can expect when you print the high ISO SD1000 images at 4 x 6 size.
