The price of most digital cameras tend to trend downwards over time, and the same price drop should occur in the case of the Canon 60D digital SLR camera.

The EOS 60D was announced on Thursday, Aug 26, 2010, and features an 18 MP (Megapixels), APS-C (1.6x crop factor) CMOS sensor, a Full HD movie mode with 1920 x 1080 (1080P, 16:9) @ 30/25/24 fps and 1280 x 720 (720P, 16:9) @ 60/50 fps capture capabilities. Weight (including a battery and card) and dimensions (W x H x D) are 755g / 26.6 oz and approximately 5.69 x 4.17 x 3.09 in. / 144.5 x 105.8 x 78.6mm respectively.

I’m not planning for any scheduled updates, but do check back here from time to time for the latest and best prices on the Canon 60D DSLR and related accessories.

The 60D is available as a body only, or as a kit (outfit) with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD (ultra low dispersion) standard zoom lens.

Remember to check the price for the kit and compare that to the individual prices for the body only and lens. Most of the time, buying the kit saves you money, but it’s sometimes cheaper to buy the body and lens separately.

Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras — This small flash gives you much better lighting capabilities compared to the internal, pop-up flash. You can bounce the light from the flash off a ceiling, for instance, giving you more natural-looking photos in low light situations. Check out the entire range of Canon Speedlite options if you require more powerful flash units.

For power, the 60D uses a single Canon LP-E6 7.2V, 1800mAh Lithium Ion battery pack. Be sure to purchase additional spares so that your camera doesn’t run out of power during extended shooting sessions.

Decide if you require the BG-E9 Battery Grip for a more comfortable vertical shooting experience and an extended battery life (see Canon 60D Battery Life).

For storage, the 60D uses SD, SDHC or the latest SDXC cards.

Refer to Rob Galbraith’s SD / SDHC card write speed tests (done on a Nikon D90) to get an idea on the relative write and read speeds of different brands of cards. At the time of writing (Oct 29, 2009), the SanDisk Extreme III SDHC cards occupy the top two spots.

Canon specifies SDHC Class 6 cards or better as a requirement for continuous movie / video capture.

While waiting for your 60D to arrive, download and read the Canon 60D Manual to familiarize yourself with the camera’s features and capabilities. Some of the general pointers in Photography Tips might be of additional help.

Good luck shopping for your Canon 60D!
