Nikon D3X Samples

Last update (Apr 23, 2009): RAW / NEF & JPEG review samples at PhotographyBlog.

This page is a collection of photo samples taken with the Nikon D3X digital SLR camera, plus related image galleries, user pictures and other examples that I’ve come across in forums, online communities, blogs and related websites.

This should help in determining if the image quality of the D3X meets your expectations.

Bear in mind that the majority of these photos are re-sized, and may have gone through post-processing, retouching or other edits. I just thought that it would be interesting to see, at a glance, what Nikon D3X DSLR owners and users are shooting with their camera.

Full-sized images, where available, will assist with judging the image quality.

HK Low has posted a brilliant image taken with the 70-300 VR mounted on the Nikon D3X.

I find the bokeh very pleasing.

Some comments:

  1. Image 1: Studio fashion shot, photographed by Frank Wartenberg, with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8G AF-S Macro at f/8. This head-and-shoulder portrait of a female model is just stunning. Colors, tonality, detail and sharpness are just perfect.

  2. Image 3: Lady with an umbrella in the rain, photographed by Frank Wartenberg, with a Nikon 200mm f/2.G AF-S VR lens wide-open at f/2.8. The amount of detail in this shot is simply unbelievable. Her face only occupies a small portion of the frame, yet you can see the fine hair and skin texture.

  3. Images 4 and 5: A Mustang, photographed by Tim Andrews, a car photographer who used the Tatsuo Iizuka with a Nikon 24-70mm AF-S and Nikon 500mm f/4G VR lenses for the shots. Tim’s opinion on the D3X was quoted in a Nikon D3X piece titled “Manager for professional products Robert Cristina on the cost/convenience of medium format versus D3x” (read this forum post for details) that’s extracted from the Nikon Pro magazine (pages 4 and 5):
Motoring specialist Tim Andrew was one of a number of photographers to work on the D3X brochure. It left a dramatic and lasting impresion on him. He found it gave him ‘medium-format looking’ files with all the flexibility of the Nikkor lens system he aleady owns. Images with the X-factor, you might call them.

    … and …
So go ahead, download the sample files and see for yourself what the D3X could mean for your career prospects, and your clients.

  4. Images 8 and 9: Reflections on a lake, and Autumn foliage and snowy mountain landscape, photographed by Tatsuo Iizuka with a Nikon 24-70mm AF-S at f/11 and 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens at f/10 respectively — beautiful, clean colors and tones. He has posted a blog entry on this photo (here’s the Google English translation).

Marcus was one of the few select photographers chosen to shoot with a pre-production model of the D3X. His samples, though not full-sized, are stunning in terms of color and tonality. The images were shot with the new Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens.

The link to Aleksandar’s gallery was posted on DPReview prior to the official announcement of the D3X. As you can imagine, there was no way to download the photos given the huge traffic spike to the site.

The gallery has nine images, and the thumbnails look like this:

For now, I’ve resigned to letting the Folx handle the downloads of the 9 files. The progress rate doesn’t look good at all, and I’m not sure how soon the downloads can complete.
