Sigma 50-200mm f/4.0-5.6 DC IF SLD Optical Stabilized (OS) Lens with Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Introduction and basic specifications

The Sigma 50-200mm lens was introduced on 3-March-2009. An extract of the press release reads:

The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function effectively eliminates the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the viewfinder as well as in the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography.

Basic specs:

  • Weight: Approx. 420g / 14.82 oz.

  • Dimensions (measurements): Diameter 74mm X Length 101.9mm (2.9 in. X 4.0 in.).

  • Minimum (closest) focusing distance: 110cm (43.3”) throughout the entire zoom range.

  • Maximum magnification: 1:4.5.

  • Filter thread size (diameter): 55mm.

A nice variety of photos (taken with a Canon 50D) can be found here, ranging from landscapes / scenics to macros / close-ups of flowers for your evaluation.

I find the bokeh to be very pleasing.

Accessories

The filter thread size on the Sigma 50-200 is 55mm, which means you’ll want to be looking at 55mm filters.
