Nikon P500 plus EN-EL5 -- Battery Life

The following Nikon P500 battery life numbers (how many photos can be taken before power from the Nikon EN-EL5 3.7V, 1100 mAh Lithium Ion battery pack runs out) is extracted from the Nikon P500 Manual and the Nikon P500 Specifications page.

The manual gives the following explanations on how battery life testing is conducted:

  1. Unless otherwise stated, all figures are for a camera with a fully-charged Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL5 operated at an ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F).

  2. Based on Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards (see the section titled “Standard Procedure for Measuring Digital Still Camera Battery Consumption” for more information) for measuring the life of camera batteries. Measured at 23 (±2)°C (73 (±4)°F); zoom adjusted with each shot, flash fired with every other shot, Image quality set to Normal, Image size set to 4000×3000. Battery life may vary depending on shooting interval and length of time menus and images are displayed.

Approximate number of still pictures: 220 shots.

Approximate movie shooting duration / time / interval: 1 hour 20 minutes (HD 1080p).

Refer to page 224 of the P500 Manual for Nikon’s advice on maximizing battery life and performance. One notable point is that the battery should be recharged and completely exhausted at least once every six months before being returned to storage.
