The price of most digital cameras tend to trend downwards over time, and the same price drop should occur in the case of the Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera.
I’m not planning for any scheduled updates, but do check back here from time to time for the latest and best prices on the Nikon D5000 DSLR and related accessories.
Officially, the D5000 is available as a body only, or as a kit (outfit) with the AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, but vendors might provide additional bundle options.
Remember to check the price for the kit and compare that to the individual prices for the body only and lens. Most of the time, buying the kit saves you money, but it’s sometimes cheaper to buy the body and lens separately.

At the time of writing, it’s much cheaper to buy the camera plus lens kits, than purchasing the items separately.
Battery options and accessories for the D5000
Nikon EN-EL9a Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery for D5000 (7.2V / 1080mAh): $29.95. It’s a good idea to purchase a spare battery as a backup so that the camera doesn’t run out of power during extended shooting sessions. The D5000 is also compatible with the older EN-EL9 battery, which holds slightly lower amounts of charge (7.4V / 1000mAh).
Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord: $32.04. Third-party remote shutter releases are also available.
Nikon ML-L3 IR (Infrared) Wireless Remote Control: $14.61
You can also consider the use of RF (radio-frequency) remote shutter triggers such as the Phottix Cleon II or Plato.
For storage, the D5000 uses SD or SDHC cards.
Refer to Rob Galbraith’s SD / SDHC card write speed tests (done on a Nikon D90) to get an idea on the relative write and read speeds of different brands of cards. At the time of writing (Oct 29, 2009), the SanDisk Extreme III SDHC cards occupy the top two spots.
To ensure smooth recording of video and high resolution images, go for Class 6 or faster cards.

For consumers who want to configure their D5000 system or for photographers who need an additional D-SLR body for an existing system, the D5000 will also be offered as a body only for an estimated selling price of $729.95.**Estimated selling price listed is only an estimate.
