The Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 lens has long been superseded by the Nikon 70-200mm VR.
But if you manage to get hold of one in mint condition, I think you’d be pleased with its performance, especially considering the price you’d pay for it compared with the much more expensive 70-200mm VR.

Review by Ken Rockwell
Ken’s Nikkor 80-200mm review is very easy to digest, and very comprehensive.
He’s written a handy list of variants of the 80-200mm lens from the earliest unit in 1982 all they way to the AF-S version produced in 1999 — 2004.

Notes
The official page for the 80-200mm lens is here, on NikonUSA.com.
This lens is no longer in production. At the time of writing, only the AF-D version can be found; there are no AF-S versions for sale.
