Photozone.de, in this Tokina 11-16mm review, has declared the Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX lens as " ... currently the best ultra-wide angle zoom lens for Canon EOS APS-C DSLRs. The resolution is impressively high throughout the zoom range (albeit a short one) and across the image field".

Compared with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm

Blake Cook comments in this forum post that the Tokina 11-16mm beats his EF-S 17-55 IS in terms of sharpness at f/2.8 (that's the lenses at wide-open aperture), color and contrast.
