Reviews

Thom Hogan’s rating of the 18-55mm VR — Thom Hogan assigned an overall rating of three stars for the 18-55 VR, and states the following as reasons to buy the lens:

  1. Comes with camera at a price you can’t resist.

  2. Very good all around; no significant optical faults.

  3. Small, light.

Here’s the link to the short forum message by Thom, who commented on the 18-55mm and the Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G lenses, and revealed that he will be posting up his Nikon DX lens conclusions later:

I’ll have more to say on this soon, as I just got done testing all the consumer DX lenses side-by-side. But the 18-55mm VR and 18-105mm VR both test out very, very well.

Extremely sharp macaw portrait — ScottJ’s “Mila Close-Up” has to be seen to be believed.

Note that his lighting (two Vivitar 285HV Auto professional flash units were used) and photographic skills played a very important part in nailing the shot, and in a reply to my question, he confirmed that the image was indeed taken with the 18-55mm VR plus Nikon D60 combination.

My favorites from the article are:

  1. Butterfly on foliage macro.

  2. Lantana flower closeup.

  3. Railroad at night.

  4. ISO400 lamp.

The bokeh from this lens seem quite pleasing, and the close-up capability is a bonus.

Here are three photos from the official D3100 image gallery was snapped with this lens mounted on the newly-announced Nikon D3100.
