Here is the Joby GP3-01EN Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Tripod which I purchased in March 2008.

Here are some examples of how I use it plus related comments.

Flash support

In this series, I mount my Nikon SB-800 flash on the Gorillapod, and wrap it round the legs of my Gitzo GT1931 tripod or ballhead.

My intention was to trigger the SB-800 flash remotely using the popup flash on my Nikon D300.

For macro and closeup shots, I always strive to have the flash head as close to the subject as possible in order to get softer lighting. I learned this trick from John Shaw’s book, Closeups in Nature.

The Gorillapod plus tripod helps make the positioning of the flash a much more flexible exercise.

The shots are shown in pairs — first the setup shot is shown, then the image I took is displayed.
