How to reduce the intensity of fill-flash on the 30D

Alex and Justin share a method of reducing the strength of the flash when used as fill-in lighting without altering the overall exposure of the image.

On your Canon 30D:

  1. Pop up the internal flash
  2. Press the metering mode
  3. Using the control dial, set the exposure compensation to reduce the intensity of the flash to the desired amount (negative in this instance) – refer to page 106 of the user guide.
  4. Note that if you hadn't activated the metering mode first, setting the exposure compensation will affect the entire exposure rather than just the intensity of the flash
