Just when you thought digital SLR cameras from Canon cannot possibly get smaller and lighter than the Canon XSi / 450D, Canon announced the all-new Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D / Kiss F digital SLR camera on 10-June-2008.

The XS is priced lower than the XSi / 450D and is targeted to take market share away from its direct competitor, the Nikon D60, which happens to be in the same price bracket.

Here's a quick look at the USA price of the camera with its kit lens for the XSi / 450D, XS / 1000D and Nikon D60 at or around the time of announcement. You can see how much more closely to the Nikon D60 the 1000D / XS is priced at.
- Canon XSi / 450D: US$800 for just the body, or US$900 with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. In the United Kingdom (UK), the price was £679.99 for the camera plus 18-55mm IS lens.
- Canon 1000D / XS: At the time of announcement, pricing for the US market was not announced, but is expected to be $200 USD cheaper than the XSi / 450D. I'll update this section as soon as the USA price is known. The UK price was set at £579.99 for the 1000D plus 18-55mm IS lens kit.
- Nikon D60: US$749.95. In the UK, the price was £529.99 with the Nikkor 18-55mm VR (vibration reduction) lens.
Feature and specification highlights
Resolution:
10.1 MP, down two megapixels from the Canon XSi / 450D.
AF points
7 autofocus point, down 2 AF points compared with the XSi / 450D. As with most other DSLR cameras, only the center AF point is of a cross type. For comparison sake, the all the 9 AF points on the Canon 40D are cross-type.
Continuous burst
3 fps (frames per second) in JPEG mode until the card fills up.
When shooting in RAW mode, you only get to shoot at 1.5 frames per second for a burst depth of 6 frames.
By way of comparison, the Nikon D60 shoots at 3 fps in both JPEG and RAW modes.
Storage
The Canon XS / 1000D takes SD (Secure Digital) or SDHC memory cards.
Kit lens
The standard Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is supplied.
The IS designation in the lens means it has Image Stabilization built-in to reduce blur from hand shake.
Data security kit capability
The Rebel XS / 1000D is compatible with theCanon OSK-E3 Original Data Security Kit.
Note that this is one factor in favor of purchasing the XS over the XTi as the older XTi / 400D does not have this capability.
