Canon T3i Price and Availability Watch

First published on: Wednesday, 9 February 2011

The price of most digital cameras tend to trend downwards over time, and the same price drop should occur in the case of the Canon EOS Rebel T3i digital SLR camera. The T3i is also known as the EOS 600D and Kiss X5 in markets outside of the United States of America.

The EOS T3i / 600D was announced on Monday, 7 February 2011, and features an 18 MP (Megapixels), APS-C (1.6x crop factor) CMOS sensor, a Full HD movie mode with 1920 x 1080 (1080P, 16:9) @ 30/25/24 fps and 1280 x 720 (720P, 16:9) @ 60/50 fps capture capabilities, and a new tilt and swivel monitor with 1,040k dot LCD monitor like the one first seen on the Canon EOS 60D. Weight (including a battery and card) and dimensions (W x H x D) are 570 g (1.17 lb) and 133.1 x 99.5 x 79.7 mm (5.2 x 3.9 x 3.1 in) respectively.

I’m not planning for any scheduled updates, but do check back here from time to time for the latest and best prices on the Canon T3i / 600D DSLR and related accessories.

The T3i / 600D is available as a body only, or as a kit (outfit) with the newly-introduced EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens. Another kit option available is the T3i plus EF-S 18-135mm IS lens.

Remember to check the price for the kit and compare that to the individual prices for the body only and lens. Most of the time, buying the kit saves you money, but it’s sometimes cheaper to buy the body and lens separately.

Refer to Canon T3i Battery Life to help with your decision on whether to purchase additional batteries.

Canon Speedlite 270EX II / Canon Speedlite 320EX flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras — These small flash units gives you much better lighting capabilities compared to the internal, pop-up flash. You can bounce the light from the flash off a ceiling, for instance, giving you more natural-looking photos in low light situations. They can also be triggered wirelessly with light pulses from the internal pop-up flash of your T3i.

For power, T3i / 600D uses Canon LP-E8 battery packs — be sure to purchase additional spares so that your camera doesn’t run out of power during extended shooting sessions.

For storage, the T3i / 600D uses SD, SDHC or the latest SDXC cards.

Refer to Rob Galbraith’s SD / SDHC card write speed tests (done on a Nikon D90) to get an idea on the relative write and read speeds of different brands of cards. At the time of writing (Oct 29, 2009), the SanDisk Extreme III SDHC cards occupy the top two spots.

Canon specifies SDHC Class 6 cards or better as a requirement for continuous movie / video capture.

If you frequently shoot with the camera in portrait (vertical) position, consider getting the Canon BG-E8 battery grip for additional comfort while holding the T3i.

The BG-E8 grip is also a source of additional battery power, and lets you insert up to two LP-E8 battery packs, or 6 AA batteries.

For rechargeable AA batteries, the low discharge types are your best bet. Look at Sanyo Eneloop and IMEDION batteries.

While waiting for your T3i to arrive, download and read the Canon T3i Manual to familiarize yourself with the camera’s features and capabilities. Some general pointers in Photography Tips might be of additional help.

Good luck shopping for your Canon T3i / 600D / Kiss X5!
