Canon A495

The price of most digital cameras tend to trend downwards over time, and the same price drop should occur in the case of the Canon Powershot A495 compact digital camera.

The Canon A495 was announced on Tuesday, 5 January 2010, and features a 10.0 MP (Megapixels), 1/2.3” CCD sensor, with a 37 — 122mm (in 35mm equivalent terms) zoom lens. Weight (without batteries) and dimensions (W x H x D) are 4.6 oz / 135 g and 3.7 x 2.4 x 1.2 in / 94x 62 x 31 mm respectively.

I’m not planning for any scheduled updates, but do check back here from time to time for the latest and best prices on the Canon A495 and related accessories.

The A495 comes in three colors, silver, red and blue, and the price may vary between them.

Typical accessories for the A495
2 x AA batteries — IMEDION or Sanyo Eneloop NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries are your best bet, as they retain the charge for a very long period of time. 2 non-rechargeable alkaline batteries are already included in the box. Purchase additional backup batteries so that your A495 continues to have a power source during extended shooting sessions. If you want to stick with Canon-brand batteries, get the Canon NB4-300 Battery Pack, or Canon CBK4-300 Rechargeable Battery and Charger Kit.

For storage, the A495 uses SD or SDHC cards.

Refer to Rob Galbraith’s SD / SDHC card write speed tests (done on a Nikon D90) to get an idea on the relative write and read speeds of different brands of cards. At the time of writing (Oct 29, 2009), the SanDisk Extreme III SDHC cards occupy the top two spots.

To ensure smooth recording of video and high resolution images, go for Class 6 or faster cards.

Good luck shopping for your Canon A495!
