The prices of most digital cameras trend downwards over time, and the same price drop should occur in the case of the Canon EOS 50D digital SLR camera.
I’m not planning for any scheduled updates, but do check back here from time to time for the latest prices and availability information on the 50D and accessories.
The 50D is available as a body only, or as a kit (outfit) with either the EF 28-135mm or EF-S 18-200mm lens.
Remember to check the price for the kit and compare that to the individual prices for the body only and lens. Most of the time, buying the kit saves you money, but it’s sometimes cheaper to buy the body and lens separately.

At the time of writing, it’s cheaper to buy the 50D and 18-200mm lens separately. It costs less to buy the 50D plus 28-135mm kit than purchasing the items individually.
Battery options and accessories for the 50D
Before checking out your 50D purchase, decide if you require a second BP-511A battery for backup and a battery grip for a more comfortable vertical shooting experience.
Canon BP511A 1390mAh Lithium Ion Battery Pack: $43.99.
Canon BG-E2N Battery Grip: $133.95. You might like to read Roland Lim’s article comparing the BG-E2N with the older BG-E2, the main difference being the newer grip features a rubber seal.
For battery chargers, choose either CG-580 ($47.80), CB-5L ($64.95) or Canon CA-PS400 Compact Power Adapter (a dual charger which can charge two BP-511A simultaneously — $109.11).
For storage, UDMA CF / CompactFlash memory cards generally give the fastest write speeds and performance.
Refer to Rob Galbraith’s card write speed tests (done on a Nikon D3X) to get an idea of the relative write and read speeds of the various brands of cards available on the market.
In Mr. Galbraith’s tests, the four fastest CF cards are SanDisk Extreme Ducati 4GB, SanDisk Extreme IV 2GB, SanDisk Extreme Ducati 8GB and SanDisk Extreme IV 45MB/s Edition 16GB.
Newer, faster and higher-capacity UDMA CF cards are now available. Some examples are Lexar Professional Series UDMA 16 GB 300x, SanDisk 60MB/s Extreme and 90 MB/s Extreme Pro series cards.
